The Client

Iceland’s Nox Medical was founded in 2006 by engineers, investors and medical professionals with extensive experience in providing industry-standard solutions for sleep monitoring and diagnostics. They provide cutting-edge sleep diagnostics through their continued efforts and investment in research.

The Backstory

Nox Medical products integrate with several types of medical sensors, both with proprietary and external devices and tooling. However, clinical patient data is not easily available and was often of poor quality or incomplete. Sleeping conditions such as sleep apnea or bruxism create specific patterns in the sensors. Since Nox Medical processes big data and their complete sensor setup might not be available in every sleep clinic, they needed an easily configurable system to generate mock data for testing of their own software components.

The Challenge

Create an easily extensible, configurable, clinical data generation framework. Include several types of Nox sensors, but also allow for new types of sensors to be added later on. The framework should be easy to integrate with the main Nox system.

The Solution

We created a proof-of-concept Windows application with configuration files that could mimic both normal and abnormal sleeping patterns. For example a software engineer would be able to specify that the oxygen intake of the patient should normal for two minutes and then go dangerously low for another two minutes.

Several Nox sensors were mocked and then integrated with the Nox main software system. The team demoed and implemented the data generation framework.

Technologies/Processes Involved

  • Windows applications: C#, WPF, Windows Forms
  • Test Driven Development (TDD)
  • Scrum Methodology
  • Internet of Things
  • Medical connected devices
  • Big data analytics
  • Data mocking and mock testing

The Team

Code4Nord provided a team four developers, one of which also acted as the Technical Lead. Two of our team members began the project on site at Nox Medical in Iceland and then the rest of the project was delivered remotely.

What Nox Medical Said

“In 2018 Code4Nord provided us with a specialised team that helped us develop software for testing purposes of one of our sleep diagnostic units. The project was successful. We had full control via daily meetings, but little management was needed. Productivity was good and exceeded our project plans. We expect to continue to use Code4Nord as an additional source in our software development.” — Sveinbjörn Höskuldsson, CTO, Nox Medical
